Dermatohistopathology is utilized as “a golden standard” in skin diseases’ diagnosis.

The Department of dermatology has its own Sector of dermatohistopathology and immunohistochemistry. It includes laboratory and à section for histological consultations, which process and stain in a specific manner surgical specimens, making them ready for observation under the light microscope.

Immunohistochemistry represents a new diagnostic method, which stains and visualizes specific cells and tissues characteristic of a certain tumour or disease via antigen-antibody reaction. It is applied in the diagnosis of malignant melanoma, benign (melanocytic nevi), malignant ( basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma, etc.) and vascular tumours (hemangiomas).

Immunohistochemistry is an indispensable diagnostic technique for skin lymphomas and lymphoproliferative diseases.

Histology and immunohistochemistry are methods of significant diagnostic and prognostic value in numerous skin diseases. The department has the option for digitalization and storage of microscopic images and performing teledermatologic consultations with leading European clinics.
